Test results

Admin staff are unable to interpret results and usually they can only say whether results are ‘normal’ or whether you need to discuss it further with the doctor. Sometimes, the doctor will have issued and left a prescription, e.g. if test results show an infection.

Getting your test results

If your test results show that you need more tests or treatment, we will contact you.

Once a doctor has reviewed your test results, you can view them:

  • by phoning us on 0161 225 6699 and we will tell you what the results are.
  • you can request to have your test results sent to you via text message if appropriate. Please request this when you see the healthcare assistant or nurse.

How long should I wait?

Blood and urine tests (excluding pregnancy tests)

2 weeks. If the result needs urgent action, the doctor will usually act on it sooner than 2 weeks.

Pregnancy tests

These are not done routinely, as home testing kits are available from pharmacies. If a test is carried out at the practice the results are usually available on the next working day.

X-rays

If you have been referred by the practice for an x-ray, MRI scan or ultrasound and have not had the results within 3 weeks, please contact the practice so we can chase the result.

For any investigations undertaken by the hospital (and not referred by your GP, but by a consultant) you will need to wait for the hospital to get in touch with you regarding your result.

Cervical Screening

Results of smear tests are usually available after 6-8 weeks. A letter with the results will be posted to you, but please contact us if you have not received this after 8 weeks.
